What size storage unit do you need?
We have a handy storage unit size guide to help you with what size storage unit you will need. A little bit of planning can go a long way. Knowing what you want to store, and the design and method by which you store the items will help you select the right unit for your needs. Begin by asking yourself a few questions:
- What do you need to store?
- What are the dimensions of the largest item you’ll be storing?
- Do you have any sensitive items?
- How often do you want to access your storage unit?
Tips for arranging storage and packing boxes:
To maximize your space, start by stacking all of your boxes and other items up against a wall in your home. Try to mimic the way you intend to arrange them in your storage unit. Utilize a measuring tape to note the approximate dimensions of the space to be filled. Then visit the storage facility with your measurements and determine the appropriate size and details for your storage unit.
To make this easier for you, we’ve outlined our storage spaces below, including common uses for each space and the approximate size comparisons. The standard indoor unit doors are eight feet tall or otherwise noted below*:
SMALL Units
5x10 (Climate-controlled)
The 5×10 climate controlled storage space is an affordable solution for items heirlooms, clothing, electronic equipment, totes, and more.
Equivalent size: Small closet
6X10
The 6×10 storage space is an affordable solution for small furniture, miscellaneous boxes, totes, files, and more.
Equivalent size: Small closet
8x10
The 8×10 storage space will fit smaller furniture, such as a loveseat or chair set, chest of drawers, small office equipment, or miscellaneous boxes and totes.
Equivalent size: Walk-in closet
10X10 (Climate-controlled available)
The 10×10 storage space allows the standard furnishings from a one-bedroom apartment along with washer/dryer, boxes, and totes. Great for storage of extra furniture.
Equivalent size: Average size bedroom
Medium Units
10x15 (Climate-controlled)
The 10×15 storage space is an excellent solution for larger family heirlooms that need protected from harsh weather conditions and humidity. Can hold furniture and belongings from a 1-2 bedroom apartment.
Equivalent size: Large bedroom
11X15
The 11×15 storage space can hold belongings and furniture from a small two-bedroom apartment, or a small house without appliances. Room for many boxes, office equipment, and totes as well.
Equivalent size: Large bedroom
15X15 (CLIMATE CONTROLLED)
The 15×15 storage space is an excellent solution for larger family heirlooms that need protected from harsh weather conditions and humidity. Can hold furniture and belongings from a 2-3 bedroom apartment.
Equivalent size: Living Room
10X20
The 10×20 storage space will fit furnishings from a two or three bedroom apartment/house, including dining room table, sofa, and major appliances. Can also hold a car, truck, or jet ski.
Equivalent size: Small One-car Garage
Large Units
10X22X9
The 10×22 storage space will hold contents of a large moving van, Furnishings from a three bedroom home, bookcases, desks, chairs, tables, appliances, plus boxes and totes.
Equivalent size: Large one-car Garage
10X25
The 10×25 storage space will hold contents from a three to four bedroom home with appliances. Similar size to an average trailer with washer/dryer and boxes.
Equivalent size: Small two-car garage
Extra Large Units
10X30
The 10×30 storage space will hold the contents of a multi-bedroom house, including large items such as appliances, couch, bed, and entertainment center. Excellent for office storage for multiple offices, computers, equipment and file boxes/records.
Equivalent size: Large two-car garage
10X30X9
The 10×30 storage space will hold the contents of a five to seven bedroom house, including large items such as a tables, couches, beds, fridge, and entertainment center. May also hold four to five offices worth of office furniture and equipment. Water equipment such as a boat or pair of jet-ski’s work well in this space. Will fit an air-boat as well.
Equivalent size: Large two-car garage
12X50X14
Large-scale, industrial. The 12×50 space will hold a multi-bedroom home, along with cars, ATVs, water vehicles, campers, and medium and full-size RV’s.
Equivalent size: Industrial shed
